Emrys Williams

EMRYS WILLIAMS 1917- 2014
Emrys Willams was born in Froncysyllte, near Llangollen, on 24th June 1917. His family moved to Ellesmere Port in 1926 and he spent the rest of his life there.A keen amateur musician and artist, he embraced the arts in a variety of forms. He sang solo tenor roles for local music and amateur operatic societies and won the Folk Song solo competition at the Llangollen International eisteddfod in 1969. He directed local choirs such as the Highfield in Runcorn, Great Sutton Male Voice choir for many years, founded the Westminster Singers, and he conducted at the North Wales Association of Male Voice Choirs’ massed concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in London. He also produced calendars of his paintings and sketches of local views for charities to sell to boost their funds. A winner of the hymn tune composition class at the National Eisteddfod and was invited to join the Gorsedd of bards in 2000. He was awarded an M.B.E. for services to local music making and charities in 2002.
